Message from the Executive Director
I am a Ugandan Clinical trialist, Research Consultant and Trainer, who trained as a medical doctor at Mbarara University of Science and Technology in Uganda. I graduated with a PhD in Epidemiology from University of Montpellier (UM1) in France, Masters in Philosophy in Science and Technology Studies from Stellenbosch University (SU) in South Africa, and an Advanced Master in Public Health Methodology (MPHM), post graduate diploma in Communication and diffusion, and postgraduate diploma in Advanced methodologies, all from Universite Libre De Bruxelles (ULB) in Belgium. I also received additional Postgraduate trainings from the Netherlands and from University of Bern, Switzerland. I have been privileged to contribute to scientific knowledge with over 55 publications and book chapters and have consistently been among the highly ranked infectious disease researchers and scientists in Uganda. While pursuing my academic degrees in diverse environments in the world, I acquired multiple skills and that created a desire in me on how to share them and contribute to the Research aspirations and human resource in Africa. I am passionate about addressing Africa’s economic and health challenges through promoting research excellence and human resource development in research. I have a 15-years’ experience in clinical research including Clinical trials, diagnostic, epidemiological and behavioral studies in Low resource settings.... Working as a Senior Researcher and Epidemiologist in International settings and organizations like MSF-Epicentre and as a lecturer, research mentor at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) and as a Senior global health scholar at University of North Carolina has greatly enabled me to not only appreciate the context of research implementation in low resource settings but also the gaps and challenges of building appropriate human resource to drive high quality research towards the development of Africa and improvement of health services in Africa. I have learnt from experience and also encourage researchers in Low resource settings to be collaborative and generous in sharing and putting their skills towards generating high impact and publishable research outputs. My short story about the genesis of Soar Research Foundation
In 2010, as I returned from Belgium from my first master in public health methodologies, although I felt appreciative of the diverse skills I had received, my thoughts were on how I could use my skills to serve more people and support research in my country and Africa. I had an idea that became an ideology on which SRF was established, that is: “The health-related challenges of Africa are unique and can best be identified and sustainably addressed by equipped and motivated African researchers themselves.” After a short time, it became clear in my mind that I needed to do something that could offer support to researchers and students within and outside Universities to achieve the best in their research endeavors. This is how Soar Research Foundation came about and I and my wife Dr Atwine Nighty Sunday agreed to establish this important Foundation to serve this purpose. SRF has become a one stop-center for Research consultancy, Research Implementation and Research trainings for many Postgraduate, PhD and independent researchers. SRF stands as an African initiated intervention to address challenges in implementing high quality research and raising of well skilled researchers in low-resource settings to contribute to Africa’s global competitiveness in research and development outputs. Today, I can confidently say that SRF is soaring high and by 2023 has supported over 350 projects and continues to establish itself as a Clinical Trials/research and Training Coordination Centre that both local and international researchers continue to contract to offer expertise and infrastructure for conducting their research. SRF also continues to establish Research training and Consultancy centers as a way of offering research services and methodological support that can enable research excellence among African researchers. Many people are continuing to be mentored in research at SRF, and our Experts continue to support Research training and mentorship even at institutions of Higher learning.
